ST HELENA 1922-37 1½d rose-red, variety, SG99/b
St Helena 1922-37 1½d rose-red, lower marginal block of 4 with part centre guide, showing variety 'Torn flag' on upper right stamp (R4/6), SG99/b.
A brilliant quality mint positional block of four with large part original gum to full original gum. Importantly, the high value printing variety is only very lightly hinged. Minor wrinkles in bottom margin, mentioned for accuracy and inconsequential.
A fine and attractive positional block.
Stanley Gibbons catalogue value: £114+.
This definitive issue first released in 1922 was designed by the St Helena-born Postmaster Thomas R. Bruce. It was similar to the 1912-16 pictorials, but instead of the Government House or the Wharf, these stamps showed the badge of St. Helena - a three-masted sailing ship near two large rocks.
