Barnabas Collins Dark Shadows board game

The Barnabas Collins Dark Shadows board game is a vintage game based on the gothic U.S soap opera Dark Shadows.

Dark Shadows is a U.S daytime soap opera which ran from 1966 until 1971, and featured many elements associated with horror and science fiction genres. The main character, Barnabas Collins, is a 200 year-old vampire and the show often featured other supernatural elements such as witches, black magic, monsters and time travel. The show is now viewed as a groundbreaking cult classic.

The Barnabas Collins Dark Shadows board game was the second to be based on the series. The first, simply called ‘Dark Shadows’, was published by Whitman in 1968. The Milton Bradley version followed in 1969.

The game is a variation on the classic game ‘Hangman’, in which players aim to assemble a glow-in-the-dark plastic skeleton from separate bones. Players take turns to spin a spinner, which has various bones and wooden stakes. If a player collects three stakes they must remove a bone from their skeleton. The winner is the first to complete their skeleton and hang it from their scaffold.

All the game’s pieces are stored in a brown plastic coffin, and it came complete with a pair of luminous plastic vampire fangs to be worn by the winning player.
