Important Brett Favre jerseys touch down at Heritage Auctions

Three important jerseys worn by the legendary NFL quarterback Brett Favre will be up for grabs at Heritage Auctions later this month.

Favre, known as 'The Gunslinger', is regarded as one of the finest quarterbacks in the history of the game.

In addition to leading the Packers to the Super Bowl in 1996, Favre remains the only player to win the NFL MVP Award three consecutive times (1995–97), and currently holds a string of records such as most career pass completions, most career pass attempts, and perhaps most notably, most consecutive starts by a player.

The first jersey on offer was worn by Favre during his final career victory with the Packers, in a 2008 game against the Seattle Seahawks which became known as the 'Snow Bowl'.

"I've been hoping for that for 17 years," Favre said after the game, which saw his lead the team to a 42-20 victory. "I was watching the weather all day and it's a shame, I'm like, 'Just give us one of those big snow games. I wanted to play where you couldn't see the field, and the snowplow comes out. It keeps getting worse and worse."

Fans watched Favre throw snowballs at his team-mates on the field once victory was assured, not knowing that the game would prove to be Favre's final win in a green Packers jersey – the very jersey offered at Heritage, with an estimate of $60,000+.

Having retired and then returned to the game, Favre saw out his career with first the New York Jets and then the Minnesota Vikings.

It was with the Vikings that his remarkable streak came to its inevitable end. Having started his first game with the Packers on September 27, 1992, Favre had made a record consecutive 297 starts throughout his career, setting a league record which remains to this day. The final game of the run came on December 5, 2010, when an early injury against the Buffalo Bills forced him from the field – and left him unavailable for the following game.

The Vikings jersey worn by Favre during the final game of his record streak is also up for sale with an estimate of $60,000+, as is the third jersey of the trio – worn during the last game of his football career.

On December 20, 2010, Favre – then aged 41, and recognized as the only active player in the NFL with grandkids – played his last game. He was forced from a game against the Chicago Bears after suffering concussion, and left the field for the final time, not knowing it would be his farewell to football.

These three historic shirts will cross the auction block as part of the Heritage Sports Collectibles Platinum Auction in Dallas on August 27-28.
