Walmart founder Sam Walton handwritten signed letter
- A rare handwritten and signed letter from Walmart founder Sam Walton
Sam Walton (1918-1992) was the founder and driving force behind the US supermarket chain Wal-Mart. Walton founded the first Walmart in 1962, in Rogers, Arkansas. Today there are more than 11,000 stores worldwide and it is the world’s largest retailer by revenue.
Walton is regarded as one of the pioneers of US retail. His new methods included volume selling, by buying at a low price and passing on the discount to his customers. In the mid-1980s he was the world’s richest man. Upon his death he willed more than $100 billion to his heirs.
Written on Walton’s “Memorandum from Sam Walton” letterhead, the 1983 letter reads:
“Donna – we’re ordinary folks – who have been lucky & worked hard.
Best wishes & good luck.
Sam Walton.”
Walton likely wrote the note in reply to a letter from Donna, asking for the secrets to Wal-Mart’s success. Walton’s reply is typical of the man. He was celebrated for his humility, work ethic and love of people.
Measures 8.5 by 5.5 inches. Good condition. A minor crease runs vertically through the note. There are minor chips at the top edge.
Also featured is the letter’s original Wal-Mart envelope, featuring a November 30, 1983 date stamp.
