Johnny Weissmuller’s parents emigrated to the US from Germany when he was a baby. During the 1920s, he became a 5 gold medal-winning Olympic swimming champion. At the end of the decade he made the decision to get into the movies. A chance meeting with a scriptwriter got him the role of Tarzan, King of the Apes in an upcoming movie series. He would star in 12 Tarzan films between 1932 and 1945.
Johnny Weissmuller signs this 8 x 10 inch black and white photograph in bold black pen. The inscription reads: “For Louis/ from/ Johnny Weissmuller/ 1935”.
That dates this autograph to the height of Weissmuller’s fame, when he was one of Hollywood's hottest stars. The condition is excellent. It’s accompanied by a letter of provenance from auctioneer Profiles in History.
Signed 10 x 8 photographs of Weissmuller as Tarzan are rare. Demand for good specimens is steady. RR Auction sold a similar example for $1,200 in 2008.
