Steinbeck has written on a lightly lined 8 x 12 inch sheet.

Steinbeck writes to artist William Ward Beecher (in part):

Dear Bill,

Enclosed is the thing I would like to have on the picture. It is from the end of forests. And it is I believe what I think. And I think it would be a good thing to put on the picture - don't you?
