James Stewart (1908 – 1997) was an American actor regarded as one of the greatest Hollywood stars of all-time.

He featured in 80 films throughout his career, including classics such as The Philadelphia Story, It's A Wonderful Life, Rear Window, Harvey, Vertigo, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

A handwritten, signed letter from James Stewart to John Wayne on his birthday.

Undated, but believed to date from May 1979.

The letter reads:

“Dear Duke,

“Happy birthday and we send you our best wishes and respect, and admiration and love – Gloria and Jim.”

Written by Stewart in black felt-tip ink on personalized stationery.

Letter measures 8 1/2" x 6 1/2" and is in good condition.

Stewart and Wayne were long-time friends who starred in three classic westerns together: How the West Was Won, The Shootist and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

A nice piece of Hollywood history with a personal connection to two of its greatest stars.
