J. Edgar Hoover (1895 - 1972) was a law enforcement administrator who served as the head of the Bureau of Investigation and the Director of the FBI for almost 50 years.

Hoover became notorious for his ruthless and often illegal methods, such as gathering secret information to blackmail his political enemies including U.S Presidents.

A typed and signed letter sent from Hoover to John Wayne dated April 8, 1970.

Typed on an official FBI letterhead, and signed by Hoover in blue fountain pen ink.

The letter congratulates Wayne on winning the 1970 Academy Award for his performance in True Grit. It reads in part:

"Heartiest congratulations on your winning an 'Oscar' as best actor of 1969. This is indeed a well deserved and splendid tribute to you and your ability."

Letter measures 9 1/2" x 7" and is in good condition.
