Harry Houdini (originally Erik Weisz) was a Hungarian-American magician, escapologist and master of self promotion. He started his career with traditional sleight of hand, but his execution was clumsy compared with his peers. Always fascinated with locks, he began experimenting with escapology. As his reputation for daring grew, so did his audience. He was one of the world’s most celebrated performers from 1899 to his death in 1926.

This attractive postcard-sized photograph shows Harry Houdini in an iconic pose and festooned with locks and chains - one of his most famous tricks.

Houdini has signed across the centre in black ink, a large and bold autograph with enormous presence.

There has been some fading to the photograph, almost inevitable given its advanced age, but the image remains clear. The autograph stands out clearly against the backing.

The image dates to 1902 and it's likely Houdini would have signed it around the same time.
