Great Britain 1911 6d bright magenta, SG296
Great Britain 1911 6d bright magenta (chalk surfaced paper), SG296.
A superb unmounted mint, with full original gum, bottom right hand corner marginal example printed at Somerset House.
A very rare King Edward VII stamp and seldom seen so fine and in this positional form.
The ink used reacted with the chalky surface of the paper and caused a variation in the colour. As a consequence, the paper itself fluoresces bright lemon under long wave ultraviolet light. It was withdrawn the day after issue and, thereafter, the 6d stamps were issued on ordinary paper.
GB Specialised Catalogue No: M35.
Provenance: Ex. Joseph Silkin Collection of Great Britain, sold through H.R. Harmer, London on June 14-16, 1971.
