Great Britain 1870 ½d rose red Plate 1, SG48
Great Britain 1870 ½d rose red Plate 1, (Watermark Inverted & Reversed), SG48.
A very fine and fresh well centred unused, with original gum, top right hand corner marginal block of thirty lettered 'AV-JX' with full deckle edge selvedge, part sheet inscription, plate number "1" and imperforate to right hand margin.
Reinforced perforations to the bottom few rows, nevertheless a spectacular multiple of this size with lovely colour, gum and centring.
A wonderful exhibition piece. Unused examples with the selvedge are particularly scarce.
GB Specialised Catalogue No: G4(1)e/g.
Provenance: Ex. "Verus".
Because of their size, the sheets of the ½d stamps were perforated from side to side rather than top to bottom, with the A column normally inserted first. Stamps imperforate on the side occurred because the final strike of the perforating comb was not made, probably because the overall length of the sheet prevented it.
