Great Britain 1862 9d bistre Plate 2, SG86

£3,500.00
SKU RS2395

Great Britain 1862 9d bistre Plate 2 (Watermark Emblems), SG86.

A very fine and fresh unused example with original gum, lettered 'MC' of this very difficult adhesive. Small tone spots on perforations at top right, which does not detract from what is a very scarce stamp in this condition grade.

The 9d value in 1862 was the rare at the time for postage to India, Australia and Brazil. The first printing plate (plate 1) was not registered or put to press. Plate 2 consisted of 240 stamps arranged in 12 panes, each pane of stamps in five horizontal rows of four.

One of the hardest Queen Victorian surface printed stamps to find and the current SG catalogue value does not do justice to its level of rarity.

Stanley Gibbons catalogue value: £5,800.
