Great Britain 1841 1d red-brown Plate 11 trial printing on Dickinson silk thread paper, SG16var.
A very fine unused four-margin example, lettered 'DI'.
A superb example of this rare trial printing, notably free from the creasing almost always encountered.
This trial was made following the trial printing of the 2d value of March 1841 in red using the 240-unit plate 11. The first and last columns of the stamps had no silk threads. The ink used blued the paper deeply. Eight sheets were printed six of these being gummed, two ungummed. This paper was not considered to be as safe as the watermarked paper and was abandoned.
