Charlie Chaplin signed photograph as Monsieur Verdoux

£3,500.00
SKU PT2028
  • A signed photograph of Charlie Chaplin as his character from the controversial 1947 film Monsieur Verdoux

Charlie Chaplin was the biggest star of the silent era. Born into poverty in Victorian London, he found his way to the stage and on to Hollywood. He came up with the character of the Tramp in 1914.

By 1918 he was a household name. A string of classic movies followed, including The Kid (1921), Modern Times (1936) and The Great Dictator (1940).

An original classic, portrait, publicity photograph of Chaplin as Monsieur Verdoux, from the 1947 movie of the same name.

Chaplin is seen holding his cane while wearing a flamboyant suit, signed in blue ink "Best Wishes, Charlie Chaplin", with a printed autograph below the original.

The film Monsieur Verdoux was poorly received and subject to protests in many major US cities due to the political themes of the black comedy.

Signed portraits of Chaplin in this role are therefore scarce.

The photograph itself measures approximate 5" by 7", and is professionally matted and framed in a display measuring approx. 9.5" by 11.5".

Provenance: ex Stanley Gibbons.
