CANADA 1897 Jubilee 15c slate (PROOF), SG132
Canada 1897 Jubilee 15c die proof in slate (issued colour) on India paper (65x63mm), die-sunk on large card (125x101mm) SG132.
A magnificent proof of the highest rarity. Pristine other than faint toning affecting card surround (from affixative gum on reverse).
The stamp was issued to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of the reign of Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria died at the beginning of 1901, after a reign of over 63 years. The printing of Canadian stamps with the portrait of Queen Victoria continued into 1902, as the new definitive stamp plates with the portrait of King Edward VII were not used until 1903.
The design features the 18-year-old Queen Victoria in 1837, from Chalon's coronation portrait, and a photograph of the 78-year-old Queen Victoria in 1897.
