Rare Bauhaus print portfolio set for Bonhams sale

25 May 2012, 13:23 GMT+01

A rare and important portfolio of prints from the leaders of the Bauhaus school will be offered as part of Bonhams’ upcoming Prints sale.

Published in 1923 in a limited run of just 100 examples, the portfolio contains eight signed prints from notable Bauhaus artists such as Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Lionel Feininger. It comprises three colour lithographs, three woodcuts and two etchings, all of which illustrate the variety of ideas and styles promoted by the movement.

The sets were produced by Lyonel Feininger, head of the school’s printing workshop, and issued in an effort to raise funds during a period of rapid inflation in Germany following the First World War.

The full contents of the portfolio are as follows:

  • 'Fröhlicher Aufstieg' by Wassily Kandinsky
  • 'Am Ofen' by Gerhard Marck
  • 'Der Verliebte' by Paul Klee
  • 'Gelmeroda'by Lyonel Feininger
  • 'Untitled’ by Lothar Schreyer
  • 'Auf dem Tisch'(S20) by Georg Muche
  • 'Abstrakte Figur' by Oscar Schlemmer
  • ‘Composition’ by Ladislaus Moholy-Nagy

Numbered ‘45’ from the original set of 100, the eight prints in the portfolio are each signed in pencil by the artists. The portfolio is expected to sell for between £70,000 - £100,000, with previous sets having sold at auction for $152,086 and $144,000.

The sale is set to take place in London on July 11.
