Only 'Worm' to win a Good Hands award... Dennis Rodman's memorabilia is for sale

Also known as 'Dennis the Menace', Rodman is famous for more than just his renowned basketball skills...

Retired veteran basketball professional Dennis Rodman is regarded as having been one of the best defensive and rebounding players in the game.

Rodman shows some of the skills which earned him his 'Good Hands' award

Known as 'Dennis the Menace' and 'The Worm', Rodman's look and image is well-known even to those with little interest in baseball. With his hair dyed many colours, assorted tattoos and piercings and occasional cross-dressing, Rodman has always stood out.

In the course of his career, he played for the Detroit Pistons, San Antonio Spurs, Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks and has now been inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. His affair with Madonna and brief marriage to Carmen Electra also brought him fame.

Now a collection of his belongings, every bit as unique as the star himself, will be going under the hammer at South Coast Auction in California on August 10.

Highlights include the 'Good Hands' award Rodman was awarded in 1995, a sequinned jacket, a spectacular piece of African mask art and a deflated signed basketball.

There is even an action figure of the man himself.

The memorabilia of sports stars is often very valuable and can retain its value for legendary players. It's unlikely that Rodman's memorabilia will reach the dizzying heights of, for example, Lou Gehrig's at a recent Heritage auction is unlikely, but we expect competitive bidding.

Of course sports stars often own collectibles which are intrinsically valuable anyway. Whether Lenny Dystra remains well remembered or not, many collectors would still be interested in owning his 18k white gold Patek Philippe Annual Calendar watch.
