McFarlane Toys is a toy manufacturer known for its action figures aimed at adult collectors.
Todd McFarlane is probably best known for creating the comic book character, the Spawn. Spawn became a very successful comic book venture and sold millions of copies. In the comic book industry, merchandising was the most logical business move for successful figures or entities. The public equally loved the action figures that Todd created based on his comic book characters.
In 1994, he established McFarlane Toys and through the years built up a reputation of quality and attention to details. His toys became the most sought after by collectors the world over.
Before he became a comic book artist, Todd McFarlane was a sportsman and it didn’t take long before he began creating action figures depicting professional players in such popular team sports as baseball, football, basketball, and hockey.
Guide for Collectors
McFarlane Toys is known for its excellent quality and life-like depiction of action figures based on personalities. For starters, die hard collectors would want to get their hands on the Blue Spawn Series that first came out in 1994 as well as the Spawn Series I that came after that.
Every year, the company chooses a theme for its toys based on characters from various popular media.
A number of McFarlane exclusive toys have also been released such as McFarlane’s Dragon, McFarlane’s Monsters, and McFarlane’s Military.
Giants in the music industry have also been depicted and included among them the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Motley Crüe, Slash, Bon Jovi, and KISS.
The priciest of the McFarlane Toys are the chase or variants. Only a limited number of them are made and purposively designed to be different from those that originally come out in the production run. An example would be a Sidney Crosby figure wearing a white “home jersey” of the Penguins. This is the original while the chase version wears a black “away jersey” of his team. The value of chase versions are significantly increased when sold by secondary sellers.
One such rare figure is the 2003 Teemu Selanne. Only thirteen of these figures of “The Finnish Flash” were created and one such figure of the hockey player surfaced on eBay with a price tag of $ 25,000. A buyer purchased it for that amount on June 1, 2009; a day after it was advertised online. It is the most expensive McFarlane figure yet.
The value of a McFarlane figure would depend on the condition. Collectors should check for defects, missing accessories, broken packaging, etc. The prince range from retailers is usually from $5 to $100 and would mark them up as time passes by. Rare collectibles cost more than $100. Chase sports figures are valued at more than $100 and may sell for $8,500. Some are known to be priced even higher.
A McFarlane Toy Collectors Club offers exclusive toys to members. New members may simply register online at Spawn.com.
Notable Auction Sales
For sales based on auctions, the priciest to date involves one of the thirteen Selannes. The starting bid on eBay was $ 2,000 but the final value reached $ 8,500 on February 23, 2008 after 15 bids from nine bidders.
On July 30, 2011, an Edward Scissorhands figure personally signed by Johnny Depp was sold by Premiere Props, an entertainment memorabilia shop that is based out of El Segundo, California, USA, for $100.
