Excellent site which details the history of the lachrymatory bottle or 'Tear Catchers' as they are often referred. lachrymatory bottles were used by those in mourning to catch and preserve their tears after a loved one has died. The bottles began in antiquity and were known to have been used throughout Roman times. They then appear to have fallen out of fashion-but they were picked up by the Victorians with whom they were very popular. If you want to start collecting-there's helpful tips too!
