Joan Crawford's Mildred Pierce dress makes $27,500

The dress worn by Joan Crawford as Mildred Pierce is a Hollywood icon

The dress worn by Joan Crawford in her famous comeback role as Mildred Pierce has sold at Nate D Sanders.

Joan Crawford Mildred Pierce dressDyed and altered, the dress was likely reused for another film at Warner Bros.

The dress made $27,500 as the auction closed on February 27. Despite being a stunning piece of movie memorabilia, it has beenre-dyed at some point in its history and therefore, biddersshowed reluctance.

The dress was originally white, but was dyed to a flesh colour at Warner Bros., presumably for use in another film. It has also been altered and the original belt was missing, replaced with a later example.

Mildred Pierce (1945) was directed by Casablanca's Michael Curtiz, and is considered Joan Crawford's defining role. Her first film for Warner Bros. after leaving MGM, it earned her the Best Actress award at the 1946 Academy Awards, as well as the title of Queen of the Movies.

That award sold for $426,732 at Nate D Sanders in 2012, with Academy Awards especially coveted by collectors due to rarity: a ban on selling awards presented post 1950 has been imposed by the Academy.

Among the other movie memorabilia offered in the sale was the Batsuit worn by Michael Keaton in 1989's Batman, an impressive piece that measures over 7-feet on its custom display stand. Tagged, "Michael Keaton#1", the piece sold for $37,500 with provenace from the Hollywood: A Collectors Ransom 5 auction in 1988 - a landmark event for movie collectors.

Also starring at Nate D Sanders were signed copies of Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf and memorabilia from Jaws.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has some fantastic movie memorabilia and autographs for sale.
