Jimi Hendrix's black Fender Stratocaster has sold on what would have been his 70th birthday

Jimi Hendrix's black Fender Stratocaster has sold with strong results, on what would have been the legendary guitarist's 70th birthday.

Valued at 120,000-180,000, the guitar met its high estimate perfectly, selling for 180,000 ($287,500) at The Fame Bureau auction in London yesterday (November 27).

Hendrix used the guitar during the majority of hisperformance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. His first time appearing with the Experience, the show has since gone down in rock history as one of the most iconic performances of all time.

The Stratocaster narrowly avoided being set on fire during the show, having been replaced at the last moment with another model that bore the brunt of Hendrix's notorious on-stage antics. During a closing rendition of Wild Thing, he famously doused the replacement in lighter fluid and set fire to it, before smashing it to pieces.

The replacement guitarused for the burning ritual sold for $495,292 in 2007, making it number five in our top five electric guitars list.

The black example in the present sale went on to live another day, and saw extensive usage in subsequent performances. The evidence of this is shown by the guitar's body, with numerous chips, scratches and worn patches. It was sold complete with its original case, though the guitar itself was missing the back plate.

With just four years in the limelight before his death in 1970, Jimi Hendrix memorabilia is some of the rarest and most sought after for music collectors. Paul Fraser Collectibles has recently sold all our Jimi Hendrix memorabilia to eager collectors, but be sure to check our online storeregularly for more.
