I've been doing some digging about the infamous/ collectible black Lotus badges that appeared on Elans in 1968. Many think that it was a tribute to the great Lotus Formula 1 champion Jim Clark, who died that year but it turns out it was more likely a manufacturing error. The idea of a black badge was toyed with to go with the new red/gold livery but Colin Chapman didn't like the idea. Somehow they got ordered and put on cars anyway! These badges still sell for a premium to collectors.
