Horton Smith's green jacket makes record $682,000 in online auction

The green jacket presented to legendary golfer Horton Smith has become the most valuable piece of golf memorabilia following Green Jacket Auctions' online sale, which closed on Sunday (September 8).

The jacket, given to Horton Smith 13 years after he won the first Masters Tournament in 1934, sold for $682,229. It was previously thought to be lost to collectors, but was unearthed by a relative who had held it since Smith's death in 1963.

The second highest bids of the sale were seen for Smith's Bobby Jones wedge, which he used to win the 1934 and 1936 Masters. It sold for $21,539.

This summer has seen notable golf memorabilia sales, including the PGA memorabilia collection of Sam Snead, which was topped by a $263,000 1946 Open Championship trophy at Heritage in August.
