Historic Pontiacs and other classic cars show their 'muscle' in San Diego

The 'Godfather of the Pontiac's' car collection is among the highlights at RM's auction, tomorrow

Here's a reminder of tomorrow's RM Auctions classic cars sale in San Diego, which will see over 100 high performance motorcars rev onto the auction block without reserve.

Among the sale's star lotswill befour automobiles from the collection of Jim Wangers, aka "The Godfather of the Pontiac".

Wangers, an ad man, was involved in some of Pontiac's most iconic advertising campaigns in the 1960s - includingthecarmaker'sinvolvement with the incredibly popular TV series, The Monkees.

Four classics from Wangers' garage will be for sale to collectors - a 1969 Firebird, a 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 10th Anniversary Special Edition, the 1989 20th Anniversary Special Edition, and the 1999 30th Anniversary Convertible.

Confidently billed by RM as "a once in a lifetime" opportunity, the cars will be offered as an Anniversary Collection without reserve - a must-see for fans of the Pontiac.

Meanwhile, Wangers' cars will appear alongside a car described by some as "the ultimate in Chevrolet muscle and style," the rare and beautiful 70 Chevrolet Chevelle SS LS6 Convertible.

Upon its first appearance back in 1964, it became known as the an "Earth Mover", thanks to the big block LS6 V8 engine under its hood producing 450hp.

The updated 1970 version appearing at RM is one of an estimated 18 of its kind ever built; since treated to a meticulous and high quality restoration with the paperwork to prove it.

Elsewhere, the old adage that "sometimes one isn't enough" will be heeded with the sale of not one but two L88 Corvettes - especially impressive considering that the L88 is nicknamed "the white whale" because it so rarely appears on the market.

RM is auctioning the gold painted L88 Coupe nicknamed "Automatically Yours", one of just 17 examples made in 1969 with automatic transmission, alongside the red painted Chassis No 194379S736298. The latter, also from 1969, was one of the last L88s ever built.

Collectors around the world will have a chance to harpoon their very own Moby Dick tomorrow (June 19), when the above motors go under the hammer in San Diego. Internet bidding is available.
