Beswick horses are a specific type of figurine produced by the British manufacturer J.W.Beswick.
About the figurines
Beswick animal figurines are highly popular amongst collectors, and horses are amongst the most sought after. The first horses were produced by the company in 1939, and continued until the company finally ceased production on all animal figures in 2002 (after being taken over by Royal Doulton in 1969).
The earliest horse figurines were based on famous race horses, with the first modelled on the Derby winner Bois Roussel. The company went on the produce 150 different horses, including a number of famous race winners including Red Rum and Nijinski. The majority were created by the company's chief modeller Arthur Gredington and Albert Hallan, up until around 1968. They were followed by Graham Tongue, who created the celebrated range of Spitrited Horse during the 1990s which are now extremely sought-after by collectors.
