In the early 20th Century cyphers were some of the most important pieces of equipment used by the intelligence services. The most famous of these was the M4 Enigma machine, used by the German Kriegsmarine to hide their Naval movements. This one is heading for auction at Christie's in an auction entirely dedicated to cypher machines and code breakers. With an estimated value of $250,000-350,000 it shows that the secrets and elusive nature of 20th century subterfuge still hold their intrigue.
