Prince Edward Island 1862 2d rose die II on cover, SG1d
Prince Edward Island 1862 (DE 16) cover from Belfast to Charlotte Town, franked at internal rate by 1861 2d rose, DIE II (from R2/5 on the sheet of 60), perforations 9, tied by light despatch 10-bar oval in red and arrival 8-bar oval in black. Backstamped with despatch and arrival (DE 17) datestamps, the former under-inked resulting in an almost complete albino impression, SG1d.
A very important unique cover of the highest rarity, being THE ONLY RECORDED FIRST ISSUE DIE II ON COVER. Some minor faults to be expected of a cover of this age, but overall a fine quality early piece of postal history.
Provenance: Ex Alan Griffiths (Spink 11 Apr 2012, lot 728). V.G.
Accompanied with a Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Research Foundation certificate of authenticity (2003) as Scott 1 variety.
Prince Edward Island was previously administered as part of Novia Scotia until it became a separate colony in 1769.
