John F. Kennedy signed Nuclear Test Ban Treaty document
- A John F. Kennedy signed Department of State Bulletin, dated August 19, 1963.
- Relating directly to the signing of the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.
On August 5, 1963, the United States, the Soviet Union and Great Britain signed the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, which limited the testing of nuclear weapons in the Earth's atmosphere.
It was a milestone in 20th century history, and is regarded as perhaps the greatest achievement of Kennedy's Presidency.
Two weeks later on August 19, an account of the signing in Moscow was published by the U.S State Department in its weekly bulletin.
This is an original copy of that Department of State Bulletin.
The front of this historic item has been neatly signed in fountain pen by John F. Kennedy and several members of his cabinet including:
- Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson
- Secretary of State Dean Rusk (who signed the initial treaty in Moscow)
- Undersecretary of State W. Averill Harriman
- Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield
- Senator J.W. Fulbright
- CIA Director John McCone
(Close inspection shows Johnson's signature is likely secretarial, which is common for pieces like this.)
Kennedy's own signature appears in the upper-left portion of the cover.
It's an excellent example, signed clearly in crisp black ink.
The overall condition and appearance of the document is very fine, with all of its original pages intact.
We know of no other copy of this bulletin signed by Kennedy or members of his cabinet.
As such, we believe it to be a unique piece of U.S political history, and a major item for any collector of political memorabilia.
