£3,000.00
SKU RS5755

Great Britain 1963 6d Paris Postal Conference Centenary error, SG636a.

Very fine unmounted mint, with full original gum, top marginal vertical strip of three with green (leaves) omitted on the bottom stamp.

A scarce positional piece of this rare QEII error of missing colour. Pierron records only 36 mint examples.

The suggestion was put forward in June 1962 by Monsieur Marette, the French Minister of Posts for a stamp issue surrounding the postal conference to mark the centenary of the first multicultural conference on international postal services. Each of the 13 countries involved were recommended to issue a commemorative stamp.

The final design for the British commemorative stamp was approved by the Queen on 16 January 1963. The words "1863 Paris Postal Conference Centenary" are in a variety of lettering styles to reflect the style of the time in 1863. The envelopes behind the lettering were designed to depict the postal nature of the event.
