Author's presentation copy, inscribed to front blank 'To Bernard Sendall from Winston S. Churchill December 1939'. Bernard Sendall (1913-1996) worked as private secretary to the First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill, from the outbreak of the war to 1941, and as principal private secretary to the Minister of Information, Brendan Bracken from 1941 to 1945. After the war he was appointed Controller of the Festival of Britain Office between 1949 and 1951, and later moved into television, where he became deputy director-general of the new Independent Television Authority, from 1955 to 1972 and the Independent Broadcasing Authority from 1972 to 1977. He wrote 2 volumes of a projected trilogy on the history of television entitled Independent Television in Britain (Origin and Foundation 1946-62 & Expansion and Change 1958-68), which was published in 1982.
