Gerhard Richter's Eis 2 poster to sell in New York
A serigraph print by Gerhard Richter titled Eis 2 is to star in a rare poster sale at DUMBO Auctions in Brooklyn, New York on February 25.
The work dates to 2003 and was released in an edition of 500.
It’s expected to sell for around $6,250-7,550.
The auction house comments: “Richter's idea of style is the enjoyment of no style at all. ‘I like everything that has no style,’ he says, ‘dictionaries, photographs, nature, myself and my paintings. Because style is violent, and I am not violent.’
“His abstract paintings, to him, are a result of a blind, desperate effort to create something that lacks a name but is, ultimately, something meaningful.”
Richter is among the world’s most valuable living artists, with an Abstraktes Bild painting selling for a record $46.3m in 2015.
A signed poster for Christo’s 5600 Cubic Meter Package is also on offer, with a valuation of $4,525-5,275.
The work is one of an edition of 90 and dates to 1986.
Christo, along with partner Jeanne Claude, is best known for his wildly ambitious projects – which have included hanging a 400m curtain across a valley in the Rocky Mountains and wrapping the Reichstag in fabric.
The poster shows 5600 Cubic Meter Package, which was the largest freestanding inflatable structure ever made. It stood at around 280 feet tall.
Other lots in the sale include prints and posters from Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso and Robert Rauschenberg.
