Rare vintages from the archive of Italian wine producer Ornellaia will be offered by Sotheby's throughout 2016.

The Ornellaia Archivio Storico includes bottles which have previously never left the Estate in Bolgheri.

"Ornellaia Archivio Storico are wines that have been undisturbed and in perfect cellaring conditions at the Estate ever since their birth,” said Giovanni Geddes da Filicaja, CEO of Ornellaia.

"The number of bottles we can release from our wine library is very limited indeed, and many are the very last bottles that will ever be released. Each bottle of Ornellaia Archivio Storico, starting with vintage 1994, provides the collector with an unparalleled insight into the wines and history of Ornellaia."

The first wines from the archive will be offered in New York, with further sales following later in the year in London and Hong Kong.

These auctions will present the final releases of vintage from 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999 in all bottle sizes, along with bottles and larger formats from 2000, 2001, 2004 and 2006, and ten exclusive lots of the inaugural Ornellaia Bianco 2013.

"Ornellaia is a wine of our time, a contemporary legend that has been a privilege to follow as it was created, developed and as it soared to success," said Serena Sutcliffe MW, Honorary Chairman of Sotheby’s Wine.

"As we tasted all the vintages in this auction, we were amazed at the longevity of Ornellaia, a quality that is always apparent in the long, lingering finish of the wines. Ornellaia is a wine of both joy and gravitas, pleasure and reflection."

The sale will also feature 300 lots from an esteemed private collection, including half bottles of Haut Brion 1989, Cheval Blanc 2000 and Gruaud Larose 1982, and large formats of Margaux, Mouton Rothschild, Palmer, Gaja and Domaine Ponsot.

Sotheby's Finest & Rarest Wines Featuring Ornellaia Archivio Storico takes place in New York on Saturday February 27.
