Sotheby's will host its final wine auction of the season later this month, with a two-day sale featuring The Exceptional Cellar of a Connoisseur.

The sale is expected to achieve close to £2 million, with more than 1,600 lots set to cross the block. According to Sotheby's, the wines on offer represent "one of the finest wine collections to be offered at Sotheby’s in London in over a decade."

"This classic and exciting collection is a reflection of a man who was passionate about art and gastronomy, as well as being an oenophile of great distinction," said the auction house. "The cellar was assembled over many years with infinite care and knowledge, and stored in perfectly temperature-controlled conditions.

"The range of majestic Bordeaux is impressive, spanning 1928 to 2010, with First Growths and Super Seconds in abundance in a variety of formats. The number of Châteaux on offer from some of the most desirable vintages is staggering: 28 each for 1961 and 1982, 47 for 1996, 35 for 1998, and 37 for the magnificent 2000. The same unerring quest for perfection was pursued in the Burgundy collection, where the list of growers is show-stopping."

The first session will feature an array of red Bordeaux with a range of both Left and Right Bank wines. Highlights include a bottle of Mouton Rothschild 1945, three magnums of Lafite 1959, seven bottles of the ‘mythical’ Latour 1961, and a case of Lafite 1981.

Notable lots amongst the second session will include a magnum of Romanée Conti 1996, three bottles of Henri Jayer Richebourg 1976, two magnums of La Tâche 1996, and twelve bottles of Côte Rôtie La Mouline 1978.

“We are very honoured to bring to auction this superb collection of wine," commented Serena Sutcliffe MW, Honorary Chairman, Sotheby’s Wine. "The sale is custom-made for wine lovers, brimming with the best crus, vineyards, producers and vintages.”

The Exceptional Cellar of a Connoisseur auction takes place in London on December 16-17.
