Willard S. Folsom's Whisky Collection
Willard S. Folsom began his 18-year long love affair with single malt whisky in 1988 when he read an article in USA Today which listed the best bars in America for single malt. As one of the bars mentioned was only a short walk from his home, Folsom and his wife went there for their first single malt whisky tasting. Over the next 18 years, Folsom collected and studied scotch. He searched liquor shops across America to find new additions for his collection. When in the UK, Folsom would have any new purchases sent to a hotel in London, where the manager would keep his whisky safe until Folsom was able to collect it.
Willard S. Folsom’s collection contained over 3,000 bottles of whisky. The collection featured wide ranges of Dalmore, Glenfiddich, Glenmorangie and Macallan. The collection also featured many commemorative and limited edition whiskies, and many other distilleries were represented.
Willard S. Folsom’s whisky collection was sold by Bonhams in 2009 across three different locations: Hong Kong, Edinburgh and New York.
Bonhams’ whisky specialist, Martin Green said:
"In over 20 years of conducting whisky auctions, this is the most exciting collection I have ever handled. Many of the bottles included in the collection will never be released again or repeated by the Whisky Industry and so the sale of the collection provides the opportunity to buy many collectables of the future."
Notable sales include a bottle of Dalmore Oculus which sold for £27,600 in London, a bottle of 1964 Black Bowmore which sold for HK$30,940 in Hong Kong and a bottle of 50 year old Dalmore which sold for $7,140 in New York.
