Whisky connoisseurs head to Hong Kong for Bonhams auction
Whisky connoisseurs will think it's Christmas all over again later this month, as a remarkable offering of old bottling heads to auction at Bonhams.
The forthcoming sale in Hong Kong will focus its attentions on old and rare single-malt whiskies from Scotland and Japan, bottled from the 1960s to the 1980s.
"Meticulously bottled by hand by master craftsmen, these vintage single malts have spent decades after distillation and maturation in the finest oak casks before being bottled and released," said a Bonhams spokesperson.
"They represent the liquid history of each whisky maker and offer great insights into the aroma and flavours characteristic of the great single malts of the world. Today these old bottlings are hotly sought after by whisky connoisseurs for their distinctive taste and rarity."
The sale will feature a strong selection of rare Japanese whiskies, with several making their auction debut.
Leading the sale is a bottle of the highly sought-after Karuizawa-1960-50 year old, priced at HK$150,000-200,000 (US$19,000-26,000), with further top lots from the renowned distillery including the Karuizawa-1964-48 year old valued at HK$60,000-$80,000 (US$7,700-10,000), the Karuizawa-1964 estimated at HK$55,000-75,000 (US$7,100-9,700), and a presentation box of three bottle from 1986-1988, priced at HK$60,000-80,000 (US$7,700-10,000).
The sale also includes more than 30 bottles of Yamazaki single cask, a selection of coveted Hanyu Ichiro’s Card series, and the limited-edition Hibiki-ceramic-35 year old presented in a unique decorative bottle.
Major highlights from Scottish distilleries will include rare bottlings from Bowmore, Macallan, Springbank, Glenfiddich, Highland Park, Glenlivet and Ardbeg.
Notable lots include bottles of the Macallan Fine & Rare-1950-52 year old, and the Macallan Fine & Rare-1947-15 year old, each estimated at HK$160,000-190,000 (US$21,000-25,000); and a bottle of Bowmore 1969, specially bottled for the 20th anniversary of the great late Italian whisky collector Edoardo Giaccone’s whisky bar in Salo.
In addition, the auction will present a selection of the finest vintage Kentucky bourbons from brands such as Heaven Hill, Old Fitzgerald, Old Weller and Pappy Van Winkle’s.
