The Whisky Exchange
The Whisky Exchange (TWE) an internet retail company specializing in rare and collectable whisky, along with other spirits. Based in London, the company also has a retail outlet inside the Vinopolis Wine Tasting Attraction, situated on London's Southbank.
Founded in 1999, the company has since grown to be the internet’s No.1 specialist retailer of whisky and other spirits, serving thousands of customers every week.
The Whisky Exchange has won a string of industry awards including the Independent Spirits Retailer of the Year (Drinks Retailing Awards 2011) and Whisky Magazine’s Online Retailer of the Year (Icons of Whisky 2011). The company has won both of these prestigious awards for the last three years in a row.
The company stocks over 2500 whiskies, of which about 1900 are Single Malt Scotch whiskies, with 200 Bourbons available and the remainder being made up of Blended Scotch, Grain, Irish, Japanese and other whiskies from countries including Wales, South Africa, India, Sweden and Australia.
In addition to this there are over 275 rums, around 200 vodkas, over 300 Cognacs/Armagnacs, 100 gins, 120 tequilas and over 400 specialist liqueurs.
The company’s founders, Sukhinder and Rajbir Singh, have spent their whole lives in retailing, having grown up helping out at their parents' wine and spirits merchant 'The Nest' in Hanwell – a family business that started out in the drinks trade in 1973, and was named 'Off-Licence of the Year' in 1992.
By the mid 1990s Sukhinder, the elder of the brothers, was already in possession of a very large collection of whisky, having started collecting miniatures in the mid 1980s and progressing to full-size bottles a few years later.
When their parents decided to retire in 1999, the brothers took the difficult decision to sell the family business and founded The Whisky Exchange. Operating from a trading estate tucked away on the outskirts of Hanwell, The Whisky Exchange was born, as an online portal where whisky fans can buy, sell or swap the bottles listed.
In 2010 the Whisky Exchange collaborated with the Scottish Distillery Dalmore to create the Dalmore 64 Trinitas, the world’s first six-figure whisky.
Only three bottles were produced, each with a value of £100,000. The first was bought by an American collector, with the second purchased by Whisky Exchange owner Sukhinder Singh who helped bring the project to life.
The third bottle was offered by the company at the 2010 Whisky Show, but as of March 2011 it had not been revealed whether the final remaining bottle had been sold.
