The Macallan 1946 whisky is a collectible type of Scotch whisky, produced by The Macallan Distillery in Scotland.

The Macallan Distillery

The Macallan Distillery was established at Craigellachie, Moray, Scotland in 1824.

It is famed the world-over for its single malts. Prior to 2004, the distillery used only oak sherry casks from Jerez, Spain.

Since that time, the distillery has employed both bourbon and sherry casks, using this new process to produce its Fine Oak offerings.

Scottish newspaper The Herald stated in 2009 that the distillery was "the world’s third largest-selling single malt (behind Glenfiddich and Glenlivet) with over 500,000 cases a year, and second largest by value."

Since 1999 the distillery has been owned by the Edrington Group.

The Macallan 1946 whisky

The Macallan 1946 whisky is a 40% single malt. The beverage was distilled in 1946, matured for 52 years, and bottled in 1998.

Its history is unusual, in that the malt was produced with large amounts of peat, due to the scarcity of coal in the aftermath of the second world war.

It is famed for its combination of citric, wood and sherry flavours.

How much is The Macallan 1946 whisky worth?

Auction prices have ranged from £2,900 to £4,200 in recent years.
