Vintage Gruen Curvex Watches are a specific style of watch produced by the Gruen Watch Company.

History and Description

The Gruen Watch Company was formed in Ohio around 1894 by Dietrich Gruen, a German immigrant who had previously worked in Switzerland. By the mid-1920s Gruen had become the biggest manufacturer of watches in America.

The first "Curvex" wristwatches for men were introduced in 1935. The watch was curved so as to fit snugly against the wearer's wrist and the workings were slim to allow for this. The Curvex became the company's most popular design. During World War Two the company ceased production to work for the US Military, and lost business to Swiss imports. Gruen finally ceased trading in 1958.

Guide For Collectors

The Curvex Govenor (produced in 1935) was the men's version of the Curvex, and the women's version, produced a year later, was called The Curvex Queen. The unique facet of the Curvex was that both the watch itself and the movement inside were both curved to provide a more comfortable fit. Both used a patented curved movement.

Only components specifically manufactured for each individual design of the Gruen Curvex can be used to restore these watches. Given the potential value of working pieces, it is vital that any repairs are carried out by a professional.

Identification Books for Collectors is a site devoted entirely to the subject of Gruen watches. Free information, catalogs, research findings, archived material, tutorials, etc, can be found there. It is here that you will also find the only currently available Gruen model identification guides. They consist of a set of 5 books.
Two guides are from the "Gruen Watch Model Identification Guide" series and are Volumes 1 and 2. The remaining 3 are from the "Decade Series" of books with the titles:
Gruen The 1930's - A Decade of Watches from the Daily News
Gruen The 1940's - A Decade of Watches from the Daily News
Gruen The 1950's - A Decade of Watches from the Daily News

Each of those books is larger in size and number of watches than the more colorful Model ID Guides. is a shortcut to the bookstore located in
