Sotheby's announce highlights of Hong Kong Fine Timepieces sale
Sotheby's has announced details of its forthcoming Fine Timepieces sale in Hong Kong, with an array of watches from the world's finest makers.
“Following the Autumn sale in October, we are excited to present the Fine Timepieces sale at Sotheby’s Hong Kong Gallery during this joyful time of the year," commented Sharon Chan, Sotheby’s Head of Watches, Asia.
"The sale will offer a wide variety of watches for every taste and all pockets, including a Van Cleef & Arpels diamond-set complication which is a romantic celebration of horological excellence, a coveted Patek Philippe minute repeater and F1-inspired chronograph creations by Richard Mille and Audemars Piguet.”
The Van Cleef & Arpels watch that leads the sale, titled Pont des Amoureux is described as "a perfect marriage of style and function". The watch face depicts two lovers, indicating hours and minutes respectively, who move towards each other on the Pont des Amoureux over the River Seine and meet, all too briefly, at noon and midnight.
Featuring a grisaille enamel dial, and adorned by approximately 11.285 carats of diamonds, the Poetic Complication is offered with an estimate of HK$600,000-$800,000 (US$77,000-$103,000).
Another notable highlight from the catalogue is a highly rare Patek Philippe Ref. 5078P platinum automatic minute repeating wristwatch. Made circa 2007, the watch is thought to be one of just 100 examples ever produced by the Swiss manufacturer and features a minute repeater regarded as "the ultimate complication in watchmaking".
Featuring an original white dial with black Roman numerals, produced before the design switched to a black lacquered dial, the sought-after timepiece is expected to sell for HK$1.85-$2.4 million (US$237,000-$307,000).
Further top lots include a Patek Philippe Ref. 5004P platinum perpetual calendar split seconds chronograph wristwatch; an Audemars Piguet pink gold chronograph tourbillon wristwatch; an A. Lange & Söhne limited edition platinum wristwatch with date and power reserve indication; and a Richard Mille white gold automatic tonneau-form skeletonised wristwatch.
The auction takes place on Sunday November 29.
