Morphy Auctions offers a feast for fine Rolex watch collectors
The upcoming Morphy Auctions sale of fine timepieces is a true feast for Rolex collectors, with more than 50 watches from the Swiss manufacturer up for grabs.
Leading the pack is a unique Rolex Air-King watch bearing the Dominoes Pizza logo, produced as a prototype during the early 1980s, when the fast food company had a reward policy of presenting branded Rolex watches to outlets which hit their performance targets.
The Rolex Ref. 5500 was the first model used during this scheme, but the watches featured silver dials, and the white dial example offered at Morphy is believed to be a sample watch, presented to Dominoes executives for them to pick a colour scheme.
As a unique timepiece valuable to collectors of watches and advertising memorabilia alike, the Dominoes Rolex is expected to sell for $20,000 - $40,000.
Amongst the most valuable gold examples are a Ref. 118238 in 18k yellow gold case with Day-date function, estimated at $15,000 - $20,000; a Presidential Day-Date Ref. 18238 valued at $8,000 - $12,000; and a Day-Date Presidential Ref. 18248 priced at $8,000 - $10,000.
For true collectors, there's a pair of mint-condition, unopened Ref. 116400 Oyster Perpetual Milgauss watches in white and discontinued black. Made circa 2008, and presented with their plastic covers still intact, the watches are offered as a single lot with an estimate of $15,000 - $20,000.
And no selection of Rolex watches would be complete without the iconic (and highly collectible) Rolex Daytona Ref. 16520, estimated at $6,000 - $8,000.
Away from Rolex, the auction will offer notable examples by the likes of Patek Philippe, Tiffany, Cartier, Baume & Mercier, Jaeger Lecoultre and Breitling, to name but a few.
The most valuable watch on offer is a Patek Philippe Ref. 5146P Annual Calender wristwatch with Moonphase, which comes with an estimate of $50,000 - $60,000.
Further top lots will include a Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Chrono 'Panda' estimated at $15,000 - $20,000, and a rare Patek Philippe Ref. 4323 with Lapis Dial, estimated at $20,000 - $30,000.
Live bidding in the Morphy Auctions Premier Watch and Timepiece sale takes place on September 22.
