'Death's Head' watches at the Clockmakers Museum
Sir George White of The Clockmakers Museum explores a remarkable 'Deaths Head' watch which was long believed to have been given by Mary Queen of Scots to Mary Seaton at the time of her execution.
The watches were inspired by the phrase 'Memento Mori' (remember that you have to die) and were created to be a constant reminder that everyone is on borrowed time.
The watches have yet to make a fashion comeback-but it seems as though Patek Philippe took inspiration from them when coming up with their slogan: '"You never actually own a Patek Philippe watch. You merely look after it for the next generation".
You can see the watch for yourself on October 23rd when the Clockmakers Museum opens for the first time at its new home at the Science Museum in London.
