Christie's announce highlights of Hong Kong watch sale
Watches from the likes of Patek Philippe, F.P. Journe, Vacheron Constantin and Cartier will lead the forthcoming Christie's watch sale in Hong Kong.
The auction will include timeless classics, rare vintage complications, dazzling examples from the world's finest jewellers, and innovative designs from leading modern manufacturers.
“Christie’s November sale of important watches will be a celebration of innovation, heritage, expertise and artistry of the world’s most prestigious manufacturers," said Frederic Watrelot, Head of Christie’s Asia Watch Department.
"We have selected some 500 top quality timepieces ranging from highly complicated models by Patek Philippe to the pioneering designs and technological advances of independent watchmakers."
A major highlight amongst the intricate, bejewelled watches on offer will be a rare platinum and diamond-set ‘Tourbillon Souverain’ wristwatch by independent watchmaker F.P. Journe. Set with 425 baguette-cut diamonds and 201 brilliant-cut diamonds weighing 73 carats overall, the 2008 timepiece is valued at HK$3.2-6.4 million (US$420,000-$830,000).
Leading the sale's selection of vintage timepieces will be a Patek Philippe’s ref. 2499, regarded as a "holy grail" for watch collectors and described as possibly the company's "most perfectly proportioned timepiece".
The example on offer, cased in yellow gold with perpetual calendar and moon phases, is one of just 349 examples ever made and comes with an estimate of HK$2.8-4 million (US$370,000-$520,000).
"This year also marks the 260th anniversary of Vacheron Constantin and to celebrate this occasion, Christie’s specialists curated a special section of 66 watches dedicated to a brand that has made such a significant contribution to the history of horology," added Watrelot.
Notable lots from Vacheron Constantin include a diamond-set ‘Lord Kalla’ bracelet wristwatch estimated at HK$1,600,000-$2,400,000 (US$210,000-$310,000), and an openface keyless lever tourbillon watch from ‘Les Complications’ collection estimated at HK$900,000-$1,800,000 (US$ 120,000-$230,000).
The Christie's Important Watches sale takes place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on Monday November 30.
