Vintage Azzedine Alaia Dresses are original items of vintage clothing created by the Tunisian fashion designer Azzedine Alaia.

Brief history and description

Azzedine Alaia (born 7th June 1939) is a fashion designer born in Tunisia. Inspired by Vogue magazine, he studied sculpture so as to learn more about designing for the human body, and went to work at a dressmaker’s, before relocating to Paris in the late 1950’s where he began his career in fashion design.

In the 1970’s, Alaia began to design clothes from his small Parisian home, having already cultivated an impressive portfolio whilst working for other big-name designers such as Christian Dior and Thierry Mugler. His clientele was exclusive and his clothing expensive and custom-made, though he would eventually branch into producing a ready-to-wear collection, which launched in 1980.

Azzedine Alaia all-but disappeared from the fashion scene during the 1990s following a personal tragedy, though he continued to produce his exclusive designs and eventually returned to the fashion industry with new collections.

Alaia is admired today not only for his designs but for his work-ethic, which eschews the commercialization of many other luxury brands.

Guide for collectors

Azzedine Alaia’s designs were particularly popular and prevalent during the 1980s.

His pieces have appeared at mainstream and specialist auctioneers, as well as appearing at online auctioneers such as eBay.

As with any purchase conducted online, prospective collectors are advised to carefully assess both the condition and authenticity of a particular piece before bidding.

Azzedine’s pieces have been seen to sell for several hundred dollars at auction, with 1980’s pieces reaching particularly high prices.
