VINTAGE AND THE CITY
***"...a new dress doesn't take you anywhere; it's the life you are living in the dress, and the sort of life you have lived before, and what you will do in it later" ***said the legendary fashion editor Diana Vreeland. And how right she was!!!
We are living in a new era of fashion; contemporary designers bring out new collections even before the current season is over. Behind ready-to-wear and couture, the high street is catching up with cheaply-made clothes that invite you to question just how it's possible to have so much purchase power. And somewhere in the middle of this crazy and fabulous world of fashion, is vintage.
It seems that lately vintage fashion has had a resurrection. New shoppers have been introduced to vintage dressing either through TV series such as 'This Old Thing' or visiting vintage markets. Furthermore if you have a look at Autumn/Winter '14 collections, you will realise that the 60's and 70's are behind the new trends. So why not go for the original thing?
Vintage dressing is so adventurous, stylish and a bit ego-centric! Most vintage lovers including myself, like wearing vintage clothes because no one else will be able to buy the same piece ever! Plus you don't need to be a die-hard vintage lover to appreciate the quality tailoring, exquisite fabrics and elegant cut of the clothes.
Introducing vintage pieces into your wardrobe doesn't mean that you need to roll up your hair or buy a red lipstick. You can incorporate a well tailored vintage coat into your everyday life and mix a vintage little black dress with your ankle boots and opaque tights for a modern look.
If you're new to vintage, I would first suggest to go for these pieces and then slowly when you are more confident go for a total full on vintage outfit.
Here are my top five pieces to start your vintage journey:
A stunning vintage coat - Why? Great quality, real wool, bold colours and a great fit.
A striking vintage brooch - Why? It will give a retro spin to any outfit.
A vintage little black dress - Why? Haven’t you seen 'Breakfast at Tiffanys'?
A 70's floppy hat- Why? Because every real vintage gal needs some mystery in her life!
A 1950's full-skirt dress - Why? Because the 50's are classic!
Happy New Season Shopping Darlings!
