Wayne Gretzky 1979 O-Pee-Chee PSA 10
The Wayne Gretzky 1979 O-Pee-Chee PSA 10 sold for $80,000 in 2006, making it the most valuable hockey trading card ever sold.
This full-colour 1979 Wayne Gretzky rookie card, showing Gretzky in his Edmonton Oilers uniform, is the only specimen ever graded as a Gem Mint 10 by PSA.
Although not particularly old or rare by trading card standards, the quality of the card and the Gretzky name have raised its value.
The Great One
The Canadian is widely regarded as the finest player to ever take to the ice.
In an NHL career that ran between 1979 and 1999, Gretzky set 61 records. His 92 goals in season 1981-82 and 215 points in 1985-86 remain records to this day.
He is often referred to as the Great One, or by his jersey number, 99.
The card exchanged hands for $80,000 in 2006. The sale was brokered by card dealer MINT State. The two parties involved have remained anonymous.
“Our consignor purchased the only PSA-graded Gem Mint 10 of Gretzky’s OPC rookie card in August 2005,” said Rick Snyder, the founder and president of MINT State.
“He made a recent decision to refocus his collection and asked MINT State to find a buyer. In less than 30 minutes, the card had sold to a private collector for $80,000, the highest price ever paid for a single hockey card.”
