Mickey Mantle rookie card crushes record
The Commerce Comet continues to bring in the dollars.
Heritage Auctions set a new world record for a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie card on the weekend.
The rare piece of baseball nostalgia sold for $1.1 million – doubling the previous record of $525,800, set at Heritage in 2015.
Its high grade had much to do with the record showing. Graded "Near Mint – Mint" 8.5 by sports card authenticator PSA, it's one of only 12 examples to achieve that rating or better. PSA has graded just 1,392 in total.
This example is the newest addition to the "8.5+" list, after a collector brought it to Heritage's booth at August's National Sports Collectors Convention.
"Beyond the stunning lack of wear, the card boasts the boldest hues we've encountered from the entirety of the 1952 Topps breed, an attribute that must be seen in person to be truly appreciated," says Heritage.
The auction also featured the $776,750 sale of a Honus Wagner card from the famed T206 series. Graded by PSA at a modest "Good 2", it was some way off the sports card record of $3.2 million – set by the "Excellent 5"-graded "Jumbo" Honus Wagner T206 last month.
