Lot 352: Titanic: Stead William T. (1849-1912) English Newspaper Editor, A Pioneer Of Investigative Journalism. Stead Died During The Sinking Of The Rms Titanic. T.L.S., W T Stead, One Page, 4To, Strand, London, 21St March 1891, To R. G. Lundy, On The Printed Stationery Of The Review Of Reviews. Stead Thanks His Correspondent For Their Letter And Continues 'I Agree With You Entirely As To The Comparative Criminality Of The Two Men. Parnell Is A Saint Compared With Dilke, And The Readiness Of English Liberals To Support Dilke And Reject Parnell Is One Of The Most Painful Illustrations Of Selfishness And Inconsistency That I Have Seen In My Time. I Do Not Think That There Are Any Details Or Statistics As To The Result Of The Working Of The Criminal Law Amendment Act Which Would Enable You To Afford A Ready Reply To Those Who Would Assail The Agitation Of 1885. It Is Not Altogether A Question Of Statistics. The Raising Of The Age Has Been Admittedly A Great Protection For Young Girls, And Has Operated As A Deterrent To An Extent That Is Never Shown By Statistics To Conviction. At The Same Time, There Have Been I Think, Ever Since The Act Was Put In Operation, From 100 To 200 Persons Constantly Serving In Jail, Who Would Have Been At Large. The Impetus Which The Agitation Here Gave To Attainments To Raise The Age Of Consent In America And The Colonies, Was, In My Opinion, Amply Sufficient To Justify All That Was Done, Even If It Had Had No Other Result'. Two Slight, Neat Splits To The Left And Right Edges Of The Central Horizontal Fold, Not Affecting The Text Or Signature. About Vg Charles Stewart Parnell (1846-1891) Irish Nationalist Political Leader. Charles Dilke (1843-1911) English Liberal And Radical Politician.] International Autograph Auctions' Autograph Auction September 2015 Saturday, 26th September 2015 Estimate: £100-120
