Vintage Fishing Tackle Boxes are collectible boxes used to store fishing tackle and lures.

Brief history

Vintage tackle boxes are a treasure trove for any vintage sports equipment collector. Not only do collectors hope to get their hands on a vintage tackle box, they also have a desire to own tackle boxes that are packed full of vintage fishing lures as well.

Types of Vintage Fishing Tackle Boxes

Vintage tackle boxes

Burley Auction Group in New Braunfels, Texas sold:

  • A vintage tackle box along with 30 Texas Bait lures for $300 in November of 2007.
  • A brown vintage tackle box full of South Bend fishing lures and a South Bend reel for $200 in November of 2007.
  • A red vintage tackle box with 15 lures, strings, weights, and tackles for $175 in November of 2007.

William J. Jenack Auctioneers in Chester, New York sold:

  • A brown vintage tackle box with 29 different lures including a Heddon and a Paw Paw for $225 in January of 2011.
  • A dark red vintage fishing tackle box with 30 different fishing lures and a 1941 hunting/fishing celluloid button for $150 in November of 2003.

Kaminski Auctions in Beverly, MA sold two vintage fishing tackle boxes (circa 1940s; 7.5' x 16' and 6' x 19') full of vintage gear like reels, hooks, knives, etc. for $150 in February of 2006.

Wooden fishing tackle boxes

Affiliated Auctions in Tallahassee, Florida sold:

  • A vintage mahogany wooden tackle box (18' x 9' x 7') with a leather handle, brass hardware, and various reels, spools, knives and other fishing equipment tools for $550 in July of 2010.
  • A vintage oak fishing tackle box (28' x 8' x 10') with three removable trays and fishing lures (some of which are wooden lures) for $200 in May of 2010.

Burley Auction Group in New Braunfels, Texas sold a vintage wood tackle box along with various vintage lures and a Heddon Pal reel for $475 in November of 2007.

Depew Auction Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia sold a vintage oak fishing tackle box (7' x 18' x 6.25') along with various lures for $160 in August of 2008.

Lang's Auction in Waterville, New York sold a vintage tronick fishing tackle box (20" x 7.75"x 7.75") with two lift out trays for $150 in November of 2008.

Crescent City Auction Gallery in New Orleans, Louisiana sold a carved mahogany fishing tackle box (circa early 20th century; 6.25' x 13' x 7.25') with 20 vintage fishing lures for $150 in May of 2010.

UMCO fishing tackle boxes

Burley Auction Group in New Braunfels, Texas sold an UMCO fishing tackle box (18.5' x 10' x 9.5') full of vintage fishing lures and tackles for $250 in
March of 2010.

Guide for collectors

Restoration of a vintage fishing tackle box is recommended, but only if there is noticeable damage. (It is also important to point out that restoring a vintage fishing tackle box could decrease its value as well).

Vintage fishing tackle boxes that come with various vintage fishing lures and/or equipment is also considered to be both rare and valuable.
