A unique letter that was written by former Manchester United manager Sir Matt Busby to the Lord Mayor of Belfast has been pulled from Belfast city council archives and chosen as document of the month for April by the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland.
The letter was written in 1970 after Manchester United were invited by Glentoran Football Club to play a match at the Oval in East Belfast to promote the Ulster 71 festival, celebrating 50 years since the states foundation.
In the letter Busby writes that he cannot confirm that the team, which included Belfast born George Best, will play. Leeds United eventually played instead.
