Umco tackle boxes are small containers used by anglers to store a plethora of fishing equipment, such as lures, lines, baits, traps, reels, hooks and spears.

History & Description

UMCO Fishing Tackle Boxes was founded in 1947 by Gordon Howard Tessmer, a mechanical engineer for Warner Manufacturing Co. in Plymouth, MN. UMCO tackle boxes became the industry standard in the 1950's and 60's and were manufactured in Minneapolis, MN.

Similar to a tool box, an Umco tackle box utilises a folding cantilever tray, which allows the internal shelves to be unfolded for convenient access to items on multiple tiers. However, when the box is closed, these shelves collapse which makes the tackle box more compact and portable.

Guide for collectors

Antique tackle boxes, especially those made by the Umco Corporation, are of particularly interest to vintage tackle collectors. Not only are they collected as a practical collectible, but the majority of sold tackle boxers come equipped with a plethora of vintage lures and various fishing paraphernalia.

Predominantly an American market, Umco tackle boxes are commonly sold in sports orientated catalogues at a variety of auction houses. Prices tend to range from $100 to $300. Antique tackle boxes manufactured by Umco are also regularly sold on eBay and prices can range from as little as $10 to $280. Additionally, a variety of Umco tackle boxes are advertised on Cyclo News5 and prices range from $10 to $200.
